While Joe Rakes In Money From Drug Companies
Gore, Lieberman Keep Seniors From Prescription Drugs
The Gore/Lieberman Reinvention Express Hits FLORIDA and NEW MEXICO Today!
· Say it aint so, Joe. As Al Gore tries to reinvent himself once again, this time waging class warfare and blaming business for everything but the weather (and sometimes for that, too), seniors should be aware that Gore himself is responsible for their paying more than necessary for prescription drugs - while running mate Joe Lieberman is raking in loads of campaign cash from the same companies Gore is busily attacking. In fact, over the last two elections, Joe Lieberman personally has raked in over $112,850 from pharmaceutical Political Action Committees (PACs) - the same companies Gore says are the powerful, not the people. In addition, Liebermans New Democrat Network PAC has taken in over $300,000 from drug companies. Why isnt Al Gore slamming Pal Joey for favoring the powerful, and not the people?" It seems what Gore really wants is cheap political gains, not less expensive prescription drugs!
· Wait until Im president. Prescription drug costs have become a hazard to the health and financial security of many senior citizens and disabled Americans. But Gore just last month refused to help pass a GOP-backed House plan to expand Medicare to cover prescription drugs for those who need it. Instead - because Gore wants an election issue more than he wants a solution that will help seniors - he lifted not a finger to persuade House Democrats to support the legislation. The bill passed anyway, thanks to Republicans joined by a handful of Democrats who cared more about getting the job done than presidential politics. But while Gore tours the country making empty promises, what must be asked is this: Why as the most influential vice president in history has he done nothing to solve this problem? For eight years, Gore has watched Medicare head towards bankruptcy. Even after the Medicare Board Trustees reported in April of 1997 that the Trust Fund would be exhausted by the year 2001 - a year earlier than previously predicted - Gore continued to sit on his hands and refused to work towards bipartisan Medicare reform. The Administration continued to turn a blind eye to the issue even after their own Secretary of Health and Human Services, Donna Shalala, urged them to act quickly. As Bill Bradley asked, if we cant trust Al Gore as a campaigner why would we trust him as President?!
· Whos linked to drug companies? Who has close ties with the pharmaceutical manufacturers? Its not just Joe Lieberman. Gore advisor and former congressman Tom Downey lobbied for Merck & Co. during 1997 and 1998; Gore advisor Peter Knight has lobbied Gore's office 47 times since 1996 for Schering-Plough; Gores chief domestic policy advisor, David Beier, is a former senior lobbyist for Genentech; and Gore advisor Anthony Podesta is PhRMA's top lobbyist, and also lobbied for Genentech. It seems Gore is - as usual - on both sides of this issue.
HENCH adds: Al Gore, lying? There's no new news here, can't we move on. The American people want to end the politics of personal destruction. There, that's what the liberal media will say. And then they'll start trashing Cheney again for owning some Halliburton stock.
